KarKloof Safari Spa Wildlife
With over 3500 hectares of vast and varied terrain to explore, Karkloof Safari Spa offers a safari experience like no other. Abundantly stocked with game including black and white Rhino, Buffalo, Hippo, Giraffe, Zebra, Wildebeest and a multitude of Antelope, Warthog and Monkeys, it is hard to believe that one is only 30 minutes from Pietermaritzburg. The fact that Karkloof Safari Spa’s magnificent property is so profusely inhabited by Africa’s finest, means there is no need for an early wake-up call… adventure when you are ready, the game rangers and our four legged friends are on standby to suit your schedule.
Whilst Servals and Black-backed Jackals abound, the sanctuary is free from large predators – creating truly timeless photographic opportunities and unspoilt game viewing moments. Unique to this sanctuary is the fact that Karkloof Safari Spa is home to a controlled breeding programme for disease-free African Buffalo herds in order to establish a significant population of these prize animals.
The essence behind this is that unbeknownst to many, as Buffalo carry certain diseases such as Foot-and-mouth, Corridor Disease and Tuberculosis (TB), all of which affect cattle – the knock on effect of this can be extremely hazardous. Karkloof Safari Spa’s Buffalo’s are disease-free certified and the dedicated game and wilderness specialists working on the property are extremely proud of their accomplishments to date.
There is nothing more inspiring than waking up to the call of the African Fish Eagle. It conjures up the hearty African beat and brings the soil under your feet alive. At Karkloof Safari Spa, over 300 species have been counted so far, so why not pick up a bird book and see if you can add to the list? Or how many species you can tick off the list? Ostrich wander in flocks as Turacos and Robins call to each other from the trees. High above, Eagles and Buzzards ride thermals, gliding, elite, unconcerned with the goings-on at ground level. See if you can find the Bronze-naped Pigeon, unique to the area. At night, wise-eyed Owls wait and watch while a chorus of clicking frogs serenade the open skies.
Some of the more conspicuous are Ostrich (introduced), Eagles (Fish, Crowned, Black, Long Crested, Wahlbergs and Martial), Yellow-billed Kite, Jackal and Steppe Buzzard, pigeons (Rameron, Rock and Green), Doves (Tambourine, Laughing, Cinnamon, Red-eyed and Cape Turtle), Kingfishers (Giant, Pied, Half-collared, Malachite and Brown-hooded), Robins (Cape, Natal, Chorister and Starred), Ducks (White-faced, Yellow-billed, Black and White-backed), Geese (Spurwing and Egyptian), Thrushes (Groundscraper and Olive), Louries (Knysna and Purple Crested) and a host of other species.
Some of the special finds include Cape Parrot, African Finfoot, Narina Trogon, Grey Cuckooshrike, Bush Blackcap and Blue-mantled Flycatcher.
