Strawberry and Toasted Almond Smoothie


A Smoothie is a wonderful way to increase your daily fruit intake in an exciting and interesting way. Here at Karkloof Spa we make our smoothies with yoghurt, but for a dairy-free option, the yoghurt can easily be replaced with coconut or rice milk.

Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C and flavenoids as well as being high in antioxidants. Almonds are a rich source of vitamin E and B vitamins. They are also rich in dietary fiber, essential minerals and monounsaturated fat, one of the two “good” fats which potentially may lower LDL cholesterol. Typical of nuts and seeds, almonds also contain phytosterols, associated with cholesterol-lowering properties.

Serves 1


5 medium sized strawberries

100 ml plain yoghurt

50 g toasted flaked almonds

2 tbs honey

4-5 blocks of ice

Wash and remove the stalks of the strawberries. Chop roughly. Place all the other ingredients, with the strawberries, in a high-speed blender and blend until smooth. Garnish with a bit of flaked almonds and a strawberry on the edge of the glass, if desired.
